Born and raised in Woodland, CA, Juliana’s local ties to the community extend far beyond her elementary and high school years. With family and lifelong friends continuing to play an active role in the growth and development of the City of Woodland, Juliana and her husband Selymon, a transplant of the Bay Area, knew it would be an ideal location to start up their family run restaurant.
House of Shah grew out of the young couple’s passion for gathering around their own kitchen and sharing meals with family and friends while celebrating their diverse cultural backgrounds. Always known for being gracious hosts and introducing their lucky guests to a wide variety of flavors, they now welcome the community of Woodland and surrounding areas to venture out and explore the Afghani culture through the one thing that ties us all together; food.
While the concept behind House of Shah is modern and hip, don’t let that fool you into thinking that the flavors will be anything less than strictly traditional. All of the meals you will find are prepared and served to meet the standards of Selymon’s mother and grandmother. After all, it is they who have graciously shared the recipes that you will soon come to know and love. Come enjoy the traditions and warmth brought to you from their kitchen to Woodland’s own Downtown on Main Street.
From the Garcia Shahsamand family to yours, and as they say in Farsi: nooshe jan!
نوش جان / nooshe jan / bon appétit
Nooshe jan literally means may your soul be nourished. It can be said at the beginning or end of a meal. At the beginning, it means bon appétit, and at the end, it's the cook's reply after you thank them. "The food was so delicious, thank you!"
